Abandoned Checkout Recovery
When a buyer leaves their phone number in a Shopify checkout without completing the purchase, NoteConfirm can send a WhatsApp sequence with a cart summary and a link to resume checkout. Configure this feature under Abandoned carts in the app.
How it works
- The buyer starts a checkout.
It must contain a valid phone number and a Shopify recovery link. Adding products to a cart without reaching checkout is not enough.
- The waiting period passes.
The first message is scheduled after the checkout's latest activity. If the buyer changes the checkout again, the waiting period is recalculated.
- NoteConfirm checks whether it can send.
It checks purchase status, opt-outs, minimum value, quiet hours, channel readiness, and limits before continuing.
- The buyer resumes their purchase.
The link opens the Shopify checkout. When NoteConfirm receives the purchase update, it closes the sequence and cancels pending messages.
Recovery uses your selected WhatsApp channel: NoteConfirm WhatsApp Unofficial API or Meta Cloud API. It operates separately from order confirmation and recovery of messages held during disconnections.
Enable recovery
- Check your plan and connection.
You need an active plan and a WhatsApp channel ready to send. On Meta, the corresponding official templates must be approved.
- Prepare your messages in Templates.
Open the cart recovery group, customize the messages you will use, and enable their templates. You can reach them through Edit messages on Abandoned carts.
- Configure the sequence.
Turn on Enable cart recovery. The first message is the base step; enable the second and final messages if needed and included in your plan.
- Set who receives messages.
Set the minimum cart value, quiet hours, and, when your plan allows it, a discount code.
- Save your changes.
Form changes take effect when you select Save. If an enabled step lacks an active template, the app identifies the template you need to enable.
Recovery starts disabled, as do the second and final messages. To pause it, turn off the recovery switch and save.
Sequence timing
Enter an amount and choose minutes, hours, or days. The first delay is measured from the checkout's latest activity; subsequent delays express the wait relative to the previous step.
| Step | Default wait | Standard range |
|---|---|---|
| First message | 1 hour | 20 minutes to 24 hours |
| Second message | 24 hours | 2 to 72 hours |
| Final message | 72 hours | 12 hours to 7 days |
Sending can happen later because of quiet hours, channel availability, or number protection. Even when you configure a shorter delay for later steps, a minimum gap of 20 hours between messages to the same phone number still applies.
Messages and variables
Each step has its own template: First message, Second message, and Final message. The recovery link is required. Use the checkout variables offered by the editor, with these exact names:
| Variable | Content |
|---|---|
{{CUSTOMER_FIRST_NAME}} | The buyer's first name. |
{{SHOP_NAME}} | Your store name. |
{{CART_ITEMS}} | A summary of checkout products. |
{{CART_TOTAL}} | The cart total. |
{{CURRENCY}} | The checkout currency. |
{{CHECKOUT_URL}} | The Shopify link to resume checkout. |
{{DISCOUNT_CODE}} | The configured static code, when included in your plan. |
Example message body for the unofficial channel:
Hi {{CUSTOMER_FIRST_NAME}}, this is {{SHOP_NAME}}.
You left these products in your cart:
{{CART_ITEMS}}
Resume your purchase here: {{CHECKOUT_URL}}NoteConfirm adds opt-out instructions to the unofficial channel's message. On Meta, use the approved MARKETING template with its return-to-cart button and opt-out option. Changing the image variant can require another approval.
You can use spintax on the unofficial channel. On Meta, sent content must match the approved official template.
Images and discounts
Each template's attachment is optional: No image, Upload image, or Product image, depending on your plan. One image per message is supported.
- Upload JPEG or PNG files up to 5 MB and 4096 × 4096 pixels. NoteConfirm optimizes them and removes their metadata.
- The library supports up to 20 images per store. Remove an image from templates using it before deleting it.
- Product images are available on Pro and Scale. An available checkout image is used; if no compatible image exists, the message is sent without one.
- From Growth, you can enter an existing Shopify discount code. NoteConfirm does not create codes or guarantee their application: Shopify validates their conditions at checkout.
If you include {{DISCOUNT_CODE}}, put it on a separate line. When no code is available, NoteConfirm omits the line containing that variable.
Sending rules
- Frequency: one sequence per phone number every 7 days and at most one message every 20 hours.
- Quiet hours: 21:00 to 09:00 by default, using the store's time zone. From Growth, you can set the start between 18:00 and 22:00 and the end between 08:00 and 12:00.
- Minimum value: checkouts below the configured amount are skipped. The default value is 0.
- Purchase and opt-out: the sequence stops when checkout completes or NoteConfirm detects that the buyer requested no more messages.
- Number protection: channel pauses, limits, and holds still apply. Recovery messages have lower priority than order confirmations.
Commercial messages on the unofficial channel can lead to reports or number restrictions. Limits reduce frequency but do not guarantee that WhatsApp will not restrict the account. On Meta, recovery messages use approved MARKETING templates and may incur additional Meta charges.
Capacity by plan
| Plan | Steps | Sequences per cycle | Daily message cap |
|---|---|---|---|
| Starter | 1 | 100 | 20 |
| Growth | 2 | 1,000 | 100 |
| Pro | 3 | 2,500 | 250 |
| Scale | 3 | 5,000 | 500 |
A sequence consumes one unit when its first message is reserved. Later steps do not consume additional units. This quota is separate from confirmed orders and NoteConfirm AI usage.
During the Starter trial, you get 1 step and up to 20 sequences in total. Once the cycle quota is reached, new sequences do not start; existing sequences can continue, subject to the other rules. Number limits can reduce the effective message cap.
Image uploads and minimum cart value are available on every plan. Growth adds discounts and configurable quiet hours; Pro adds product images. On a downgrade, settings are preserved, but capabilities outside your new plan no longer apply.
Results and activity
Under Results, follow the funnel from abandoned checkouts to contacted buyers and recovered orders, view recovered sales, and check sequences used this cycle. Amounts are shown by currency without adding different currencies together.
The statistics window is 7 days on Starter, 30 on Growth, 90 on Pro, and 400 on Scale. Under Recent checkouts, search buyers, filter by status, and sort the list. Phone numbers are masked.
- In progress: the sequence remains open, even when waiting for its sending time or channel.
- Recovered: the purchase was linked to this checkout after a message sent within the previous 7 days. Click tracking is not required.
- Completed: checkout finished without meeting the recovery attribution condition.
- Opted out: the buyer stopped receiving messages.
- Skipped: a rule prevented recovery from continuing; check the reason next to the status.
- Sequence exhausted: no steps remain and no more messages are scheduled. A later purchase can still be attributed as recovered if it meets the 7-day window.
Checkout personal data is purged after 30 days. Aggregate statistics can be kept longer depending on your plan. See the privacy policy.
If a message is not sent
- Check that activation was saved.
Make sure there are no unsaved changes and your plan is active.
- Check your templates.
Enable the template for each enabled step. On Meta, also check approval of the official variant and the channel connection.
- Check the checkout and its status.
It needs a valid phone number and recovery link. A completed purchase, opt-out, or value below the minimum can prevent sending.
- Check timing and limits.
It may be waiting for quiet hours or the 20-hour gap to end. Check the cycle quota, daily cap, and number protection.
Frequently asked questions
Does it recover carts from visitors who did not leave a phone number?
No. The feature works with Shopify checkouts containing a valid phone number and recovery link.
Does it replace Shopify recovery emails?
No. NoteConfirm configures the WhatsApp sequence; your Shopify email automations are managed separately. Review both to coordinate contact with buyers.
Does a recovered order prove the buyer clicked the WhatsApp link?
No. Attribution links the purchase to the checkout and a recent sent message. The buyer may have returned through another channel.
What happens if I disconnect WhatsApp?
The sequence cannot send while the channel is not ready. Sending every step after reconnection is not guaranteed: checkout validity, deadlines, and limits still apply.
